The St. Mary's
University School of Law Restorative Justice Initiative (RJI) is the
work of concerned law students with a desire to use their status as
future lawyers to be of benefit to their neighbors by facilitating
justice through the healing and restoration of those affected by
offenses and the resulting harms.
The organization was
loosely formed during the 2006-2007 school year. After receiving some
generous gifts from concerned citizens who believed in their effort, the
group pursued one of its primary goals: to participate in the clinical
application of restorative justice in their community.
In November of 2007
the Faculty and Administration of St. Mary's University School of Law
voted to admit the group as a Recognized Student Organization. In
April of 2008, less than 6 months after being officially recognized by
the School of Law, the group was awarded the University's St. Thomas More
award for work which reflects the pursuit of social justice as
alliterated in
St. Mary’s mission statement, a grant by the San Antonio Bar Foundation
for RJI’s community service, and chosen by student peers as the Student
Bar Association Organization of the Year.
